Mounted Flap Wheels: Shank Mount vs Spindle Mount
A mounted flap wheel is any flap wheel permanently fixed to its own arbor — either a shank that chucks into a handheld tool, or a bore that slides onto a powered spindle. The mount decides what tool you need, so start there.
Shank-mounted flap wheels (drills and die grinders)
Shank-mounted wheels have a round steel shaft coming out of the hub. Small 1/4" shank versions are die-grinder abrasives made for metal deburring — stiff, narrow and aggressive. For wood, the better shank-mounted option is the chuck-mounted drill wheel: our 2" drill-attached flap wheels and 4" drill-attached wheels put a wide, flexible, cloth-flap wheel on the drill you already own. Wider wheel, softer action, no gouging — the difference between finishing a table leg and grinding a weld.
Spindle-mounted flap wheels (bench motors and table sanders)
The larger wheels — 2"x10" through 12"x10" — have a bore instead of a shank and mount on a 3/4" spindle fixed to a bench motor or built into a table sander. This is the repeat-work setup: bring parts to the wheel, sand at consistent speed and pressure, and refill the same hub with replacement strips when the abrasive wears.
